So it's close to the end of the month again. At the beginning of the month I took a tighter look at project management. Instead of making lists I started keeping track of estimated time.
Days of work estimated at beginning of month: 42
Days of work estimated now (27 days later): 31
Obviously that has me concerned. So I have to make some changes. First, my estimations are way off, it is a big deal, and I do have to get a lot better at it, but it's not the end of the world. I'm going to tighten up how I do project management this month even more.
I'm putting this down to emphasize how far off people can be with estimates. It's not just me, human beings suck at estimating time. And the larger the amount of time, the more variables involved the worse you tend to be at it. This isn't an excuse for me, as people in my profession can get pretty good, but it's a skill to be admired to be sure.
That other change I feel compelled to do is work with someone on at least a bi-weekly basis. That is, sit down with someone for a couple hours, twice a week, to get some questions answered, some back and forth feedback and good amount of coding done. I'll be looking around for someone to help in this manner, a part time, local AS3 programmer for some contract work.
I've already been working with people abroad, and it's been great, but I do have to keep up with someone local as well. Part of my goals involve working with a small team of people to create great games. Now seems like a good time to start.
