Profit Model Pt 1

So if you played that link to SAS Zombie Assault 2 you'll have an idea of what I consider an ideal profit model. But there's a lot of "why" behind that. So let me use this opportunity to explain.

Think of your favorite rock band. Most of the time their songs are sold on CD or iTunes and MP3. But they are also played for free (and in full) on the radio. The quality is a bit worse, but still more than tolerable.

What makes you buy the CD or MP3?

For most it's because they want to hear the music when they want to, at better quality and TO SUPPORT THE BAND.

The last one is the most important because if you ask a music pirate why they would buy the music (as opposed to pirate it) you'd hear them only list that last one. "To support the band."

In fact most big fans will not only buy the CD they will buy tickets to concerts, shirts, hats, posters any any other paraphernalia. Why? Because they really like them, and "To support the band."

Now if something happens and the band gets bad all of a sudden sales may drop off. And this is what I call "goodwill".

This is what I feel is the natural state of creative media, copying and how users pay. This is what I would like to embrace. If people have the money, you make a good product, they know about you and they are at the means to do so.

They will support you.

Developer Notch of Minecraft fame recently said:

"We’ve got an amazingly effective way of distributing culture that is extremely beneficial for humanity, but it clashes with our current economical models. Piracy will win in the long run. It has to. The alternative is too scary."

I believe he means other forms closer to what we consider piracy now will have to win out, as the opposite, totalitarian media control is indeed a nightmare.

So how would I have this view and expect to make any money? That will have to wait for tomorrow.
